Jonathan Simonds – Secretary-General

Jonathan is a rising senior in Morse College at Yale. Hailing from Amherst, Massachusetts, he is pursuing a major in environmental engineering. He is interested in the intersection between global health, environmental engineering and international environmental cooperation. When not discussing international relations, Jonathan enjoys preparing and eating food, and spending time outdoors. In his free time, he is involved with Yale Engineers Without Borders and competes with the Yale Triathlon Team.

Maria Gargiulo — Director-General of Administration

Maria is a sophomore in Pierson College at  Yale University from New York. She is majoring in statistics with a keen interest on how statistical methods can be used to address global issues. Outside of the classroom, she is involved with the Yale Climbing Team and does research on wartime sexual violence and armed groups along with her involvement with the Yale International Relations Association through her participation in SCSY, YMGE, and of course, YMUN China. When Maria isn’t busy with these activities or academics she enjoys doing yoga, exploring, and drinking tea.

Riley Tillitt — Director-General of Academics

Riley is a sophomore in Davenport College at Yale University. He originally hails from Eden Prairie, Minnesota and is majoring in history. Apart from being the Director-General of Academics for YMUN China, he is also the USG of Regional Bodies for YMUN XLIII, treasurer for Yale Students for Sensible Drug Policy, part of the Dwight Hall Socially Responsible Investment Fund, and an enthusiastic member of Yale's Minnesota Club. When he’s not editing topic guides and ensuring YMUNC 2017 is the most incredible conference ever, he likes to spend time hanging out with friends, lounging around one of Minnesota’s 10,000 gorgeous lakes during the summer, and trying to end the United States' hopeless war on drugs!

Jason Hu — Under-Secretary-General of Delegate Training

Jason Hu is a sophomore in Berkeley College, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Last year, he served as YMUN China’s Director of the Organization of American States, and he is excited to come back. In addition to serving on OAS, he has also chairs committees for the Security Council Simulation at Yale and Yale Model United Nations. Beyond international relations events at Yale, Jason is involved in graphic design, student government, research, and community service.

David Jiang — Under-Secretary-General of Business and Conference

David H. Jiang, born in the Gobi Desert, grew up in Japan, and currently resides in Minnesota, is currently a sophomore hoping to studying global affairs, or politics and economics. He has been involved with Model United Nations since high school and has served as President of the Security Council at the Minnesota Model UN conferences held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At Yale, he has served as Director of Human Rights Council at YMUN China 2016 and as the Chair of the Security Council at YMUN 2017. He was the Undersecretary General for Delegations of Security Council Simulations at Yale XXXIX. Aside from Model UN, he is also involved with the Davenport Pops Orchestra, the Chinese American Student Association, and is a proud member of the Yale Rifle Team.

Muriel Wang — Under-Secretary-General of Committees

Muriel Wang is a freshman in Trumbull College from Singapore and Boston. She has also spent some time in Shanghai and in New Hampshire. In addition to YMUN China, she is an Assistant Secretary General at YMUN XLIII and an editor on the Yale Review of International Studies. Outside of YIRA, she is involved in Yale Children’s Theatre, Elm City Echo, and the Women’s Leadership Initiative. In her free time, she eats chocolate, watches sitcoms, and listens to the Fratellis. She is excited to be in Shanghai again and hopes to make this year’s YMUN China an amazing experience!

Genna Abele – Director of the Advisory Panel on Latin American Narcotics

Genna Abele is a freshman in Berkeley College at Yale. She is originally from Palos Verdes, California. She is currently undecided about her major, but she enjoys history, economics, writing, and foreign languages. On campus, in addition to YMUN China, she is a member of the Women’s Club Water Polo team, Yale UNICEF, and Net Impact. During her free time, she loves swimming, reading, music, and spending time with family and friends.

Rocel Balmes – Director of WHO

Rocel Balmes is a freshman in Morse College at Yale University from Central Florida. She is potentially majoring in global affairs with a concentration in public health (though she is very indecisive, so this is subject to change). In addition to YMUNC, she also serves as a Vice Chair on YMUN’s UN Women committee. On campus, she writes for the Yale Daily News and The Politic, covering events ranging from startup live pitch competitions to the arrival of international political authorities. She is also involved with “Kasama,” the Filipino cultural organization on campus, and loves to eat Filipino food. Outside of school, she likes to dance (badly), eat (a lot), and sleep (occasionally). She’s so excited for YMUNC, and hopes she can make the experience as exciting for you as it is for her.

Michael Borger – Director of OHCHR

A freshman in Silliman College, Michael is a prospective political science and women's, gender, & sexuality studies double major at Yale, who has split his life so far between a small suburban American town in New Jersey and the bustling Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo. As part of the Yale International Relations Association, Michael has served as the Assistant-Secretary-General of Committees for the Security Council Simulation at Yale, as a chair for the Specialized Brazilian committee at the on-campus Yale Model United Nations conference, and as an international relations teacher to local high school students through the Hemispheres outreach program. Aside from YIRA, Michael is the Human Rights Global Brigades Program leader for the Yale Undergraduate Legal Aid Association (YULAA), and works as the Events Chair for the Brazil Club of Yale. In his not-so-frequent free-time, he walks around New Haven in a pathetic search of the perfect cup of coffee and attends club swimming practices as a pretense to splash around in the water.

Katherine Kidney – Director of SPECPOL

Katherine Kidney is a sophomore in Calhoun College at Yale University. She is from the Washington, D.C. suburbs and is majoring in history. When Katherine is not studying, she can be found with her Kappa Kappa Gamma sisters, debating, or writing. She is a member of the Yale Political Union's Independent Party and enjoys writing for The Politic, a campus publication. Katherine also loves painting and fashion and if left to her own devices would scour instagram all day with a cup of coffee in hand.

Brian Kitano – Director of UNSC

Brian is a sophomore in Branford College. He is originally from Norwalk, CT and is majoring in Computer Science. Aside from being a director for YMUN China, he has been a vice chair, and chair, and a USG in all of Yale's home conferences. Outside of YIRA, he works on the Yale Computer Society, the Alexa Competition, Yale Model Congress, and plays club squash. He loves to walk around barefoot and read with his headlamp, and is excited to go to China for the first time!

Hanah Lee – Director of  EU

Hailing from sunny Arcadia, California, Hanah is a freshman in Silliman College who is interested in studying global affairs or economics. Outside of class, Hanah is actively involved in YIRA's constituent programs, the Yale Rotaract Club, and the Asian American Student Alliance. In her spare time, some of her favorite hobbies include binge watching bad rom-coms and napping.

Alexandra Lombardo – Director of 1950 Plenum of the Central Committee of China

Alexandra Lombardo is a junior from Indianapolis in Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University. Alexandra is premed and is a prospective East Asian studies major focusing on China. Outside of YIRA, she is involved with HAVEN Free Clinic, Accent (Yale’s multilingual magazine), and club basketball. If traveling were free, you would never see her again.

Michelle Santos – Director of ECOFIN

Michelle is a sophomore in Stiles College at Yale University. Originally from Chicago, she is majoring in economics and math. She is committed to her position as Chair of OAS for YMUN XLIII and Chair of ECOFIN YMUN China. Her other activities include running Yale Undergraduate Diversified Investments with her other board members and the Yale Rock Climbing Team. Michelle often spends her time watching South Park and Family Guy while also multitasking and reading a book.

Monica Traniello – Director of UNDP

Monica Traniello is a sophomore in Calhoun College from Boston, Massachusetts. She plans to major in either economics or global affairs, with a focus on international development. Outside of YMUN, she participates in Yale Undergraduate Diversified Investments and the Yale Women’s Leadership Initiative. After spending last summer in Beijing studying Mandarin, she is very excited to return to China. In her free time she loves exploring art museums, practicing yoga, and hanging out with friends.
